Job Summary

The Radiologist SME will provide clinical and operational expertise to support the assessment and transformation of the VA’s National Teleradiology Program (NTP). This role ensures that all workforce, performance, quality, and workflow recommendations are clinically sound, operationally feasible, and aligned with best practices in radiology and teleradiology services.

Primary Responsibilities

Provide expert guidance on radiology clinical operations, including:

Diagnostic imaging workflows (order → acquisition → interpretation → reporting)

STAT, ASAP, and routine exam prioritization

Subspecialty coverage and read distribution

Support development and validation of:

Radiologist staffing models (FTE requirements, productivity benchmarks)

Workload balancing strategies across multiple facilities

Evaluate current NTP performance, including:

Turnaround time (TAT)

Quality and accuracy of reads

Coverage models (after-hours, rural support, gap coverage)

Contribute to defining performance metrics and clinical KPIs

Advise on best practices in teleradiology, including:

Centralized vs distributed reading models

Use of subspecialists

Quality assurance and peer review processes

Support assessment of:

Integration of AI tools into radiology workflows

Alignment of clinical workflows with PACS and imaging systems

Collaborate with:

Program Manager and analysts

Financial and workforce modeling teams

Imaging IT (PACS/informatics) SMEs

Provide input into:

Quality management frameworks

Governance and organizational design

Review and validate final recommendations to ensure clinical feasibility

Minimum Qualifications

Board-certified Radiologist (MD or DO)

8–10+ years of clinical radiology experience

Experience with:

Teleradiology or distributed reading environments

Multi-site or enterprise imaging operations

Demonstrated knowledge of:

Radiology workflows and operational models

Productivity benchmarks and workload measurement

Experience with:

Quality assurance and peer review processes

Strong ability to translate clinical insight into operational and strategic recommendations

Desired Qualifications

Experience with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or other federal healthcare systems

Prior involvement in:

Radiology program design or transformation

Workforce planning or staffing model development

Familiarity with:

Enterprise imaging systems (PACS, VNA)

AI applications in radiology

Experience supporting:

Performance improvement initiatives

Multi-facility or national radiology programs

Leadership experience (e.g., Section Chief, Medical Director, or equivalent)
