This home-based (remote) position is open to Washington residents and those residing on the ID/WA and OR/WA borders. Field work throughout Washington is required and is expected to occur less than once a month, with notice.
The Washington Medical Commission (Commission) conducts highly sensitive and complex investigations involving physicians and physician assistants when there are concerns related to patient harm, practitioner impairment, or unprofessional conduct.
The Opportunity
This position operates under general direction and provides clinical expertise to assess allegations of substandard care and compliance with Commission orders. The
Clinical Health Care Investigator
applies advanced clinical judgment to evaluate medical care, determine adherence to standards of practice, and develop recommendations that support administrative and legal actions.
- Key Responsibilities IncludeClinical Review & Analysis
- Review and analyze complex medical records to evaluate standards of care and regulatory compliance
- Apply clinical expertise to determine whether care meets accepted medical practice
- Investigations & Evidence Development
- Gather, document, and synthesize evidence, including medical records and witness statements
- Prepare clear, comprehensive reports to support administrative or legal action
- Collaboration & Consultation
- Partner with commissioners, attorneys, and staff to provide clinical insight and recommendations
- Support case development by translating medical findings into actionable guidance
- Audits & Practice Reviews
- Conduct standard of care audits and compliance reviews in clinical and hospital settings
- Evaluate medical practices including procedures, pharmacology, and billing considerations
- Compliance & Infection Control
- Perform infection control inspections and compliance reviews tied to disciplinary orders
- Provide clinical context to help practitioners understand findings and expectations

Required Qualifications

Must hold an active license in one of the following professions: allopathic or osteopathic physician (MD or DO), physician assistant (PA or PA-C), registered nurse (RN) or nurse practitioner (NP)
- Additional Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, And Experience
- Experience will include practical skills in MS Excel for spreadsheet tasks, database management, MS Word for document creation and formatting, and Microsoft Outlook or similar email systems for electronic correspondence.
- Experience using the Internet for research and the navigation of proprietary data management systems.
- Experience using plain language to develop and deliver communications, reports, or summaries to differing levels of understanding or use.

- Additional experience in a clinical setting as an allopathic or osteopathic physician, physician assistant, RN, or ARNP outside of the residency.
- Experience managing investigation caseloads and conducting thorough investigations using appropriate investigative processes
