GIS Project and Data Engineer
Position Overview:
The GIS Project and Data Engineer serves as the tactical anchor for the project lifecycle, ensuring seamless communication between field operations and GIS systems. This role combines hands-on technical management of As-Built drawings and CAD files with the organizational discipline required to track deliverables and maintain company standards. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented professional capable of navigating the bridge between engineering design and geospatial data integrity.
Role and Responsibilities
- Technical Integration & Data Governance
- CAD-to-GIS Harmonization: Audit AutoCAD files for technical compliance and execute the precise translation of data between CAD and ESRI environments.
- Geospatial Integrity: Apply a strong understanding of projections and coordinate systems to ensure all data aligns with Arcadian internal geodatabases.
- As-Built Validation: Act as the primary intake for field vendor data, reviewing submissions for spatial integrity and attribute completeness before importing records.
- High-Stakes Deliverables: Coordinate and package complex GIS deliverables for external stakeholders including Caltrans, CDT, and Hyperscalers.
- Tactical Project Coordination
- Central Liaison: Act as the point of contact for routine project status, ensuring engineering teams, inspectors, and contractors are aligned on milestones.
- Operational Support: Facilitate internal and external project calls by documenting action items and distributing project summaries.
- Technical Judgment: Make sound, timely decisions regarding data workflows and involve appropriate stakeholders to maintain high standards of quality.
- Process Excellence & Compliance
- SOP Architecture: Develop and maintain technical documentation, standard process guides, and reference materials for evolving GIS and CAD workflows.
- Audit & Maintenance: Perform routine attribute edits and quality checks to proactively flag and resolve data inconsistencies.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all engineering and design activities adhere to company policies, contract requirements, and safety standards.
- Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Project Management, or a related technical field required.
- 1–3 years of experience in a GIS, engineering, or technical project support role required.
- Minimum 2+ years of AutoCAD experience (Civil 3D focus) and functional proficiency in ArcGIS Pro data editing required.
- Knowledge of outside plant (OSP) telecommunications engineering and construction processes preferred.
- Strong technical writing skills and the ability to convey complex geospatial concepts to diverse audiences preferred.
- Capable of working autonomously in a remote environment while maintaining a preferred, collaborative, customer-focused attitude.
- Familiarity with office and field observer safety requirements.
- Hands-on experience with ESRI geodatabases, spatial data editing, and mapping workflows. Familiarity with telecom-specific inventory tools, industry standards, and databases. Proficiency in AutoCAD app development and workflow automation.
- Exposure to project management platforms such as Smartsheet, MS Project, or Asana.
