Job Description
Senior Managing Editor is a critical role in SIL's academic publishing workflow, leading and coordinating editorial production across our publishing programs. This is a key leadership role focused on ensuring that all content meets our high standards for accuracy, clarity, tone, and mission alignment and meets projected timelines. The ideal candidate is an experienced editor and project manager who thrives in a fully remote environment and is passionate about nonprofit publishing and SIL's mission-driven work. Full time applicants preferred but will consider 20-30 hours per week applicants.
- Responsibilities
- Oversee editorial workflows for multiple publications, from manuscript to final proof
- Collaborate with authors, editors, designers, production staff, and marketing to manage project timelines and deliverables
- Supervise inhouse content editors, copyeditors, and proofreaders
- Ensure consistency in voice, tone, and style across all publications
- Implement and maintain editorial guidelines and processes
- Stay current with issues, trends and best practices in academic publishing
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrated success managing complex editorial projects and teams (or equivalent)
- Exceptional copyediting, line editing, and proofreading skills
- Strong understanding of editorial workflows, house style sheets, style guides (e.g., Chicago), and project management tools
- Comfortable working independently in a remote team environment
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
- Commitment to publication accessibility; and equity, diversity, and inclusion of language in publishing
- Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced credentials in Publishing or disciplines related to SIL domains preferred
- 3+ years experience managing editorial teams, or cross-functional content projects
- 5+ years experience working in SIL domain or project roles (or equivalent) preferred
- 5+ years of editorial experience in non-profit academic publishing, or extensive experience as a regularly published author of academic articles or books
- Proven experience with manuscript development, content editing, copyediting, and proofreading across a range of formats (books, digital content)
