Position Title: Federal & State Grant Writer – Municipal Clients (1–3 Years Experience)
Type: Part-time hourly, 20+ hours/week
Location: California preferred. Remote within the U.S.; availability during Pacific Time business hours required.
Compensation: Competitive hourly compensation based on grant writing experience and qualifications. Most candidates hired for this role fall within the $25–$40/hour range.
B&A Grant Services is seeking an experienced Municipal Grant Writer with 1–3 years of federal or state grant writing experience to develop competitive grant applications for local government clients. This role focuses on municipal grant writing, federal grants, state grants, infrastructure funding, housing grants, public safety grants, and community development funding.
This is a collaborative, team-based grant writing position, not an isolated freelance role. Grant Writers receive structured training, writing feedback through internal review processes, and shared resources to support consistent quality, professional growth, and a rewarding career in public-sector grant writing.
The strongest candidates are accountable, detail-oriented, deadline-driven professionals who take pride in producing accurate, persuasive, and compliant grant applications.
- Municipal Grant Writer Responsibilities
- Develop competitive federal grant applications, state grant applications, and municipal grant proposals for local government clients.
- Write persuasive grant narratives that integrate technical, financial, demographic, and community data into clear, compelling, and funder-aligned applications.
- Prepare complete and compliant grant application packages, including budgets, budget narratives, project timelines, Gantt charts, schedules, scopes of work, letters of support, maps, photo exhibits, and all required application forms.
- Deliver assigned grant writing projects efficiently and within established project budgets and timelines.
- Ensure all grant applications comply with program guidelines, scoring criteria, formatting requirements, page limits, and submission deadlines.
- Manage multiple grant writing assignments simultaneously across different municipal clients, funding programs, and application deadlines while maintaining accuracy, consistency, and deadline compliance.
- Conduct in-depth research using federal, state, and local data sources and mapping tools (e.g., Google Earth, U.S. Census Bureau, California Community FactFinder, CalEnviroScreen) to support data-driven grant narratives and competitive grant applications.
- Interview City staff, subject matter experts, consultants, engineers, and client stakeholders to gather technical information and develop compelling, funder-ready grant content.
- Translate complex technical, infrastructure, housing, transportation, public safety, and community development information into accessible and persuasive grant narratives.
- Support funding strategy efforts related to government grants, infrastructure funding, housing grants, transportation grants, public safety grants, and other public-sector funding opportunities.
- Grant Writing Skills & Professional Qualifications
- Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, clarity, and consistency across all written grant application deliverables.
- Strong grant writing, analytical, and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to synthesize large volumes of technical, financial, and community information into cohesive grant narratives.
- Excellent written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple grant writing projects, competing priorities, and tight deadlines in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Strong time-management and project-management skills with careful attention to detail across multiple concurrent grant applications.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative, team-based grant writing environment.
- Professional judgment, accountability, and reliability in managing workloads, meeting commitments, and supporting overall team success.
- Comfortable interpreting federal and state grant guidelines, funding criteria, and application requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively with municipal clients, City staff, consultants, engineers, and subject matter experts.
- Required Grant Writing Qualifications
- 1–3+ years of professional experience in federal grant writing, state grant writing, or municipal grant writing.
- Experience developing competitive grant applications, grant narratives, funding justifications, and supporting application materials.
- Familiarity with federal, state, and local government funding programs and grant application processes.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Experience using Adobe Acrobat Professional.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines and concurrent grant writing assignments with strong attention to detail.
- Strong written communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote, team-based professional environment.
- Preferred/Nice-to-Have Grant Writing Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Public Administration, Political Science, or a related field.
- Experience writing grants for municipalities, local government agencies, public infrastructure projects, transportation programs, housing programs, public safety initiatives, or community development projects.
- Familiarity with California funding agencies, state grant programs, and municipal funding priorities.
- Experience interpreting Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFOs), scoring criteria, and grant program guidelines.
- Remote Work & Technical Requirements
- Ability to work efficiently, professionally, and independently in a remote work environment while maintaining consistent communication and collaboration with team members.
- Reliable high-speed internet connection and a quiet, distraction-free workspace suitable for professional video meetings and client calls.
- Professional presence and communication skills in virtual meetings conducted through Microsoft Teams and other online collaboration platforms.
- Ability to work standard Pacific Time business hours and participate in scheduled team meetings, client meetings, and collaborative review sessions.
- Access to a PC-compatible work environment with proficiency using Microsoft Office applications.
