We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Nonprofit Controller to oversee and modernize financial workflows, donor and grant management, and accounting operations for a portfolio of nonprofit clients. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a firm or multi-client environment and enjoys improving systems, processes, and workflows across organizations.The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience supporting multiple nonprofits, optimizing financial operations, and working across modern accounting and financial technology platforms. This role plays a critical part in strengthening the financial health of client organizations by improving efficiency, accuracy, and visibility.

Key Responsibilities:

    Financial Operations & Process Improvement
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve financial policies, procedures, and workflows tailored to nonprofit operations.
  • Lead efforts to modernize accounting processes and ensure adoption of current financial technology.
  • Manage Accounts Payable (AP) and Accounts Receivable (AR), including vendor and customer communications, payment negotiations, and follow-up on overdue or uncashed payments.
  • Ensure strong cash flow management by overseeing deposits, invoice payments, and fund tracking.
  • Support credit card management, including transaction coding, compliance, and timely payment processing.
  • Partner closely with bookkeepers to coordinate invoice payments, coding updates, and reconciliations.
    Grant & Donor Management
  • Maintain and monitor grant reporting schedules to ensure timely and accurate submissions.
  • Track grant fund allocations and investigate spending discrepancies.
  • Oversee donor management processes, including donor statements and receipt issuance.
    Payroll & HR Coordination
  • Collect, review, and approve timesheets to ensure payroll deadlines are met.
  • Act as a liaison with HR on payroll-related matters, including employee classifications and payroll tax selections.
    Compliance & External Coordination
  • Stay current on nonprofit compliance requirements and ensure proper documentation and reporting.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for external audit partners by preparing documentation, policies, and financial context (audit coordination only; audit execution not required).
    Experience & Qualifications
  • Undergrad or Masters with Accounting Focus
  • Experience overseeing accounting operations for multiple nonprofit organizations (firm, outsourced accounting, or multi-client environment strongly preferred).
  • Proven ability to modernize processes, improve workflows, and implement or optimize financial systems.
  • Experience working in accounting systems beyond QuickBooks Online (e.g., Sage Intacct, NetSuite, Financial Edge, or similar).
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting, grant tracking, and donor reporting.
  • Comfortable collaborating cross-functionally with bookkeepers, HR, and client leadership.
  • Data conversion or system migration experience
  • This role is not intended for CPAs or auditors and does not require public accounting or audit backgrounds.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $110,000.00 - $140,000.00 per year
