Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Medical Billing Specialist to provide part-time support for our growing practice administration services company. This role involves managing the full billing cycle, including accurate claims submission, timely follow-up on unpaid claims, and resolution of billing issues across multiple payers and specialties. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, highly organized, and skilled in medical billing, with a strong understanding of industry standards and payer requirements. You will collaborate with our internal team and physician clients to help ensure efficient, compliant, and optimized revenue cycle operations.
Key Responsibilities
ยท Accurately prepare, review, and submit electronic and paper medical claims to Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance carriers
ยท Verify patient insurance coverage and eligibility prior to claim submission when necessary
ยท Monitor accounts receivable and perform timely follow-up on unpaid or denied claims to ensure maximum reimbursement
ยท Identify and resolve billing errors, denials, and discrepancies through appeals or corrections
ยท Post payments and adjustments from explanation of benefits (EOBs), electronic remittance advice (ERAs), and patient payments
ยท Communicate with insurance companies, patients, and physician offices to clarify information and resolve outstanding issues
ยท Maintain up-to-date knowledge of payer policies, coding guidelines, and industry regulations
ยท Generate and share billing reports or summaries for internal use and client review as needed
ยท Protect patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and all applicable laws and regulations
ยท Provide recommendations for process improvements to enhance billing workflow efficiency
Day-to-Day Expectations
To give you a better idea of what this role entails, hereโs what a typical day may look like:
Morning:
Review communications from payers, clients, and internal team for urgent issues or claim updates. Log in to clearinghouse platforms to address any claim rejections. Enter and submit medical claims generated while ensuring completeness.
Midday:
Contact payers regarding ageing claims or denials and document follow-up efforts. Prepare and submit appeals for claims denied due to errors, missing information, or payer issues. Enter payments and adjustments from ERA/EOB files into the billing system.
Afternoon:
Generate patient statements, respond to billing questions, and resolve account issues or payment arrangements. Check in with team members and clients.
Ongoing:
Identify recurring payer issues or workflow gaps and suggest process improvements. Stay updated on payer rule changes, ICD/CPT updates, and HIPAA compliance requirements. Assist in maintaining accuracy in patient demographics.
